Robert Wesley Bransford

Son of prosperous planter Robert Moseley Bransford (13 slaves), in 1860 he was a 28 year old farmer in Buckingham County, VA. He had previous militia service and was assigned as a Private to Company B, 41st Virginia Infantry on 11 April 1862 at Norfolk, VA.

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to about 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was formally exchanged to return to duty on 10 November 1862 and was back with his company about February 1863. He was absent, sick, in August and October 1864, the latest records in his military file.

By 1870 and to at least 1880 he was again a farmer in Buckingham County, VA.

He's also on the Confederates In Frederick List.2 Personal details from family genealogists, the US Census of 1860-1880, and his widow's pension application of May 1902. His gravesite is on Findagrave; his recent government stone has his death in 1898, in error.

He married Mary Judith Holman Winfrey (1837-1855) in September 1854. He married again, Ann Elizabeth Layne (1837-after 1902) in 1856 and they had at least 7 children between 1858 and 1875.
