Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 23 year old farm hand living with his parents, 3 siblings, and 4 slaves on their farm at Laurinburg(h) in Richmond County, NC. He enlisted at Laurel Hill, NC on 20 February 1862 and mustered at Camp Mangum near Raleigh on 10 (or 16) April as a Private in Company D, 46th North Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to about 18 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was in a Richmond, VA hospital by 8 October and was formally exchanged on 10 November 1862.

He was promoted to 3rd Corporal on 1 January 1863 and to 2nd Corporal on 30 June 1864. He was surrendered and paroled at Greensboro, NC on 1 May 1865.

After the War

By 1870 and to at least 1880 he was a farmer at Laurinburg, NC.
