Before Sharpsburg
A 19 year old farmer, he enlisted at McLean's Crossroads, NC on 21 February 1862 and mustered at Camp Mangum near Raleigh on 16 April as a Private in Company D, 46th North Carolina Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.
The rest of the War
He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD, was admitted to the US Army General Hospital in Chester, PA on 2 October, and was afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware from 24 October to 15 December, when he was sent to City Point, VA for exchange, arriving on the 18th. Except for brief hospital stays in 1863 and 1864, he was with his company to the end of the war, surrendered and paroled at Greensboro, NC on 1 May 1865.
After the War
In 1880 he was a store clerk in Wilmington, NC.
