Thomas Cooper

In 1860 he was an 18 year old turpentine worker living with his parents and 10 siblings on their small farm near Owensville (now Roseboro) in Sampson County, NC. He enlisted at Clinton, NC on 12 March 1862 and mustered at Camp Mangum near Raleigh on 16 April as a Private in Company I, 46th North Carolina Infantry.

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD on 9 September, left behind, and captured there on the 12th.

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to about 18 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was in a Richmond, VA hospital by 31 October, furloughed home on 2 November, and was formally exchanged on 10 November 1862. He returned to his company about February 1863.

He was sent to a hospital in Wilmington, NC on 22 April 1863 and was there into July. He was back a hospital, in Fayetteville, NC in July 1864, and furloughed home from there on 6 November 1864 for 60 days. He was captured at Hatcher's Run, VA on 31 March 1865 and sent to Point Lookout, MD, and was a prisoner there until when he took an oath of allegiance to the United States and was released on 26 June 1865.

In 1870 he was a farm worker living with his parents and siblings in Sampson County, NC but by 1880 was farming his own place there. By 1910 he was retired and living with his wife and youngest daughter Flora in Goldsboro, Guilford County, NC.

He married Sarah Judson Autry (1844-1927) in December 1875 and they had 4 daughters.
