Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 19 year old living with his parents and 5 siblings on their small farm near Hannersville in Davidson County, NC. He enlisted there on 3 March 1862 and mustered on 15 April at Camp Mangum near Raleigh as a Private in Company B, 48th North Carolina Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.
The rest of the War
He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September then transferred for exchange. In February 1863 he was noted as having "deserted enroute to Regt after parole and exchange by escape from guard." He returned to his company by April 1864 but was again listed as a deserter from the hospital in October 1864. He returned in time to be surrendered and paroled at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.
After the War
In 1870 he was a farm worker at Silver Hill in Davidson County, NC but by 1880 and to at least 1910 had his own farm there.

He married at least 4 times: Betsy Shaw (1840-) in 1864, Rebecca Tysinger (c. 1844-) in about 1867 - he probably had 4 daughters with these two women. He then married Rebecca Jane Fine (1857-1915) in 1900 and Mittie Lowmon (1875-) in 1915.
His brother-in-law John H Shaw was also in Company B and captured at Frederick with him.
