Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 23 year old miner at Silver Hill in Davidson County, NC. Giving his occupation as carpenter, he enlisted at Lexington, NC on 14 May 1861 and mustered on 6 June at Garysburg, NC as a Private in Company I, 14th North Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862, by a gunshot that entered at his left hip, traveled through his body, and exited his right hip, and was captured there.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to US Army General Hospital #5 in Frederick, MD on 21 October, sent to Fort McHenry in Baltimore on 8 November, paroled for exchange there on 12 November, and was admitted to a hospital in Richmond, VA on 21 November. He was furloughed home for 60 days on 29 November 1862 and was back with his company about 28 January 1863. He saw action again at Gettysburg, PA in July and was surrendered and paroled at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.

After the War

By 1880 and to at least 1910 he was a farmer at Silver Hill, NC.
