Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 15 year old living with his older brother Joseph, a blacksmith at Statesville, NC. He enlisted in Salisbury, NC on 15 March 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company C, 48th North Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 18 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was formally exchanged on 10 November 1862 to return to duty, but still listed as absent, sick into June 1863, the latest record in his military file.
