Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 47 year old wagoner living with William and Eliza Smith near Hamly's Creek in Davidson County, NC. He enlisted in Palmers, NC on 11 March 1862 and mustered on 15 April at Camp Mangum near Raleigh as a Private in Company H, 48th North Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was formally exchanged on 10 November 1862 to return to duty and was back with his company by February 1863. He was with them to at least October 1864 and was discharged for illness and age on 21 March 1865.
