Richard Bailey Rockett

He was orphaned in 1845 at his mother's death and in 1860 he was a 21 year old living on his maternal aunt Isabella Spears Carter's farm at Sandersville in Washington County, GA. He enlisted there on 4 March 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company H, 49th Georgia Infantry.

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was formally exchanged on 10 November and was back on duty by December.

He was wounded by a gunshot in action, probably at Fredericksburg, VA on 13 December, and treated in CS Army hospitals in Charlottesville and Lynchburg, VA. He was back with his company in January 1863, was promoted to 3rd Corporal in August 1863, and was captured in action at the Wilderness, VA on 6 May 1864. He was a prisoner at Point Lookout, MD then sent to Elmira, NY on 15 August, where he took an oath of allegiance to the United States and was released on 14 June 1865.

By 1880 and to at least 1900 he was a farm laborer in Washington County, GA.

He married Sarah Nicholas “Sally” Brookins (1853-1933) in December 1868 and they had at least 11 children.
