Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 19 year old laborer living with his father (and stepmother and step-siblings?) and 2 slaves on their farm at Riggsbee, Chatham County, NC. He enlisted there on 25 February 1862 and mustered at Camp Mangum near Raleigh on 21 April as a Private in Company B, 49th North Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was admitted to a hospital in Richmond, VA on 7 October and furloughed home for 35 days on 6 November with no later record in his military file.

After the War

In 1870 he was a blacksmith at Pittsboro in Chatham County, NC but by 1880 was a farmer in Chatham County. In 1900 he was a peddler there.
