Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 31 year old farmer at Statesville in Iredell County, NC. He enlisted in Rowan County, NC on 19 March 1862 and mustered at Camp Mangum near Raleigh on 21 April as a Private in Company C, 49th North Carolina Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD on 8 September, left behind, and captured there on the 12th.
The rest of the War
He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was formally exchanged on 10 November and returned to duty in January or February 1863.
He was sent to a Richmond, VA hospital on 24 June and absent, sick to at least September 1863. He was mortally wounded in action, date and place not given, and died on 10 November 1864.
His widow Martha filed a claim for his final pay in March 1865.
