He enlisted at Sperryville, VA on 18 June 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company D, 49th Virginia Infantry. He transferred to Company K and was appointed 5th Sergeant, date(s) not found.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He received pay at Richmond, VA on 13 October and was formally exchanged on 10 November to return to duty.

He was paid again on 9 May 1863 with no later military record.
