James Mouchet

In 1860 he was a 44 year old farmer living with his (brother?) John and (sister? sister-in-law? wife?) Noriscia Mouchet and 10 slaves on their plantation near Tallahassee, Fl. Giving his age as 35, he enlisted there on 27 February (or 1 March) 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company C, 5th Florida Infantry.

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to about 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was formally exchanged on 10 November 1862. He was sent to a hospital in February 1863 and absent, sick, to about May.

He was severely wounded in the left leg and captured in action at Gettysburg, PA on 2 July 1863. He was treated at the US Army's Letterman Hospital there and his leg was amputated due to infection on 6 August. He was transferred to the West Buildings Hospital in Baltimore in October, and on to City Point, VA for exchange on 12 November 1863. He was afterward on furlough and in hospitals to at least March 1865 and did not return to his company.

He was still living with John and Noriscia Mouchet on their farm at Tallahassee in 1870.
