Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 31 year old farmer at Madison Court House in Madison County, FL. He enlisted in Madison County, FL on 26 April 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company D, 5th Florida Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.
The rest of the War
He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was admitted to a hospital in Richmond, VA by 6 October, sent to the parole camp, date not found, and formally exchanged on 10 November. He reported to his company on 12 December 1862.
He was appointed First Corporal on 1 April 1863 and wounded in action on 1 November 1863, place not given, and was in a hospital to at least the end of the year. He transferred to Company A of the 2nd Florida Infantry Battalion on 5 February 1864 (listed as a deserter on the 5th Florida rolls) and returned to Company D of the 5th Infantry on 6 June 1864. He was retired to the Invalid Corps on 16 December 1864 and was surrendered and took an oath of allegiance in Madison County, FL on 15 May 1865.
After the War
In 1870 he was a farmer at Manatee, FL. By 1875 he'd moved to Fort Ogden,Manatee County, FL and was half-owner, with his much older brother Louis (1809-1884), of the schooner Laura. He was Captain of the vessel on a voyage carrying cattle from Key West, FL and is crew reported that he'd fallen overboard and was lost near Key West on 17 October 1875. His family suspected foul play due to later behavior of two of his sailors.
