Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 25 year old farmer living with Solomon Sills and family on their cotton plantation (840 acres, 26 slaves) near Tallahassee in Leon County, FL. Sills' was his brother-in-law; married to John's sister Lucinda (Lucy). He enlisted in Tallahassee on 20 February 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company K, 5th Florida Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD on 9 September, sick, left behind, and captured there.
The rest of the War
He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 22 September then at the USA General Hospital in Chester, PA from 2 to 22 October. He was sent to Fort Delaware and was a prisoner there to 15 December 1862, then paroled and sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange.
He was probably wounded and was captured in action at Gettysburg, PA on 3 July 1863, treated in the US Army hospital in the West Buildings in Baltimore, and was sent to Fort McHenry in Baltimore on 14 August. He was transferred on to Point Lookout, MD on 21 August then to Elmira, NY, and was there to 14 June 1865, when when he took an oath of allegiance to the United States and was released.
After the War
In 1885 he was again a farmer, on the widow Lucy Sills' plantation in Leon County, FL. He lived in Leon County to at least 1902.
