Darling Wesley Dowling, Jr.

In 1860 he was a 17 year old farm hand living with his widowed mother and 5 siblings on their small farm at Blackshear in Pierce County, GA. He enlisted there on 4 March 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company A, 50th Georgia Infantry.

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, sick, left behind, and captured there.

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September, afterward paroled and transferred for exchange. Except for a period of unauthorized absence in September and October 1863, he was afterward with his company until captured at Burkeville, VA on 6 April 1865. He was held at Point Lookout, MD until 26 June 1865, when he took an oath of allegiance to the United States and was released.

By 1870 and to at least 1880 he was a farmer with his own place back at Blackshear, GA.

He married Mary Frances Harris (1843-1924) in 1861 and they had 11 children.

His brother Lazarus and brother-in-law Edmund Thomas were also in Company A and present on the Campaign.
