Private

George Washington Ott

(1845 - 1927)

Home State: Georgia

Branch of Service: Infantry

Unit: 51st Georgia Infantry

Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 16 year old living with his parents and 2 younger brothers on their small farm at Camilla in Mitchell County GA. He enlisted there on 4 March 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company A of the 51st Georgia Infantry. The were renamed Company C by June.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 18 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange, arriving there on 6 October. He was formally exchanged on 10 November to return to duty and furloughed for 40 days from Chimborazo Hospital #1 in Richmond, VA on 17 November. He was wounded at Chancellorsville, VA in May 1863 by a gunshot to the right side of his neck, the "ball lodging" there. He was in hospitals in Virginia and Georgia into October 1863. He was issued clothing in December 1863, but there is no later record in his military file. He was probably discharged due to paralysis from his wound, date not given.

After the War

By 1870 and to at least 1900 he was a farmer at Camilla, GA. He first applied for a Confederate pension in March 1889, noting that his right arm and hand were still paralyzed, "contracted and stiff, rendering the hand substantially and essentially useless to perform the ordinary manual avocations of life." In 1910 he was a mail carrier at Pelham, GA and in 1920 worked in a beef market there. He was visiting his son Albert in Doerun, Colquitt County, GA at the time of his death in 1927.
