James Franklin Barron

In 1860 he was a 17 year old living with his parents, 3 siblings, and 13 slaves on their plantation at Fort Mill in the York District, SC. He enlisted there on 22 June 1861 and mustered as 4th Corporal of Company H, later B, of the 6th North Carolina Infantry. He reenlisted on 11 April 1862 at Louisa Court House, VA at the reorganization of the regiment, and was promoted to 5th Sergeant by June. He was wounded in the Seven Days Battles near Richmond on 27 or 30 June.

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 18 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was admitted to a hospital in Richmond, VA on 7 October, formally exchanged on 10 November, and returned to duty from the hospital on 16 December 1862.

He was promoted to 4th Sergeant on 30 April 1863 and to First Sergeant on 11 August. He was seriously wounded by a gunshot to his left arm on 2 June 1864, furloughed home from a hospital in Richmond on 14 July for 60 days, and listed as absent without leave after 29 August 1864 when he did not return. He was again absent without leave as of 10 February 1865, the latest record in his military file.

He moved to Arkansas in 1866 and by 1870 was a farmer at Monticello in Drew County, AR. He had a general store there in 1880 and moved his family to Florida in 1883. In 1910 he was the Postmaster at Micanopy in Alachua County, FL and by 1920 was retired and boarding with the Alonzo Smith family in Micanopy.

He married Jane Ann Minerva Killian (1842-1909) in September 1864 and they had 3 children.

His brother Archibald Alexander, Jr was also in Company B and was killed at Petersburg, VA in July 1864.
