Before Sharpsburg
He enlisted in the York District, SC on 1 January 1862 and mustered as a Private Company B of the 6th North Carolina Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.
The rest of the War
He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was admitted to a hospital in Richmond, VA on 7 October, was furloughed for 30 days on 25 October, and was formally exchanged on 10 November 1862. He returned to duty in January or February 1863.
He was slightly wounded in a finger on 22 June 1864, probably at Petersburg, VA, and was afterward frequently absent, sick in hospitals or on furlough into December 1864. He was surrendered and paroled at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.
