Before Sharpsburg
Age 27, he enlisted at Chester, SC on 11 April 1861 and mustered the same day as a Private in Company A, later I, of the 6th North Carolina Infantry. He reenlisted on 8 April 1862 at Louisa Court House, VA at the reorganization of the regiment. He was reported missing in action near Williamsburg, VA on 6 May.
On the Campaign
He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.
The rest of the War
He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 18 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was admitted to a hospital in Richmond, VA on 8 October, formally exchanged on 10 November, and returned to duty in January or February 1863.
He died on 17 January 1864 at Gaston City, NC: probably at his parents' farm there.
His widow S.E. Lawing filed a claim for his final pay in July 1864.
