Before Sharpsburg
He enlisted at Columbia (or Clarendon), SC on 21 July 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company K of the 6th North Carolina Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD on September, left behind sick, and captured there.
The rest of the War
He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 18 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware. He died there, date not found.
His family filed a claim for his final pay in May 1863.

His service from his Compiled Service Records,1 online from fold3,. He's also on the Confederates In Frederick List.2 Personal details from family genealogists, at least one of whom has his death in Frederick, MD, and the US Census of 1850. His memorial is on Findagrave. He's seen as William Pleasant McAlister, Sr on his son's death certificate, but he had an older brother William James McAlister IV (1836-1886), so that my be an error.
He married Mary Louisa Frier (1838-1922) and they had 2 children.
