Before Sharpsburg
He enlisted at Bethlehem Church, VA on 6 August 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company E of the 6th Virginia Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.
The rest of the War
He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 18 September and afterward at the Camden Street hospital in Baltimore to 3 November, then sent to Fortress Monroe, VA for exchange. He was admitted to a hospital in Richmond, VA on 8 October, formally exchanged on 10 November, and returned to duty in November or December 1862.
He as promoted to 2nd Corporal on 1 January 1863 and was in a hospital in Richmond, VA with pneumonia from 19 June to 26 July, afterward on furlough to 10 August 1863. He was with his company until surrendered and paroled at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.
