Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 19 year old clerk living with Mary Lewis and 7 slaves at London Bridge in Princess Anne County, VA. He enlisted at Norfolk, VA on 3 April (or Princess Anne County, VA on 4 April) 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company F of the 6th Virginia Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort McHenry in Baltimore to 13 October, then sent to Fortress Monroe, VA for exchange. He was in a Richmond, VA hospital and was formally exchanged on 10 November 1862. He returned to his company in December 1862 and was absent, sick, for much of the last half of 1864 and into 1865. He was captured in Jackson Hospital in Richmond, VA on 3 April 1865 and paroled there on 23 April.
