Before Sharpsburg

A 26 year old farmer from Princess Anne County, VA, he enlisted at Norfolk, VA on 22 April 1861 and mustered at Kempsville, VA on 13 May as a Private in Company F of the 6th Virginia Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to about 18 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was in a Richmond, VA hospital by 30 October, was formally exchanged on 10 November, and returned to his company from the hospital on 13 January 1863.

He was ill in a hospital in Richmond, VA from 31 May to 25 August 1864. He was captured in action at Burgess Mills near Petersburg, VA on 27 October 1864 and held at Point Lookout, MD until he took an oath of allegiance to the United States and was released on 13 May 1865.
