Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was an 18 year old farmer living with the Robert W Dudley family on their farm at London Bridge in Princess Anne County, VA. He enlisted at Norfolk, VA on 22 May 1861 and mustered on 30 June as a Private in Company F of the 6th Virginia Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 22 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was formally exchanged on 10 November, and was back with his company by 1 January 1863.

He was afterward with his company until he was killed in action in "the Crater" at Petersburg, VA on 30 July 1864.
