James Washington McKinney

He moved to Florida in January 1856. Giving his age as 18, he enlisted at Orlando, FL on 17 May 1862 and mustered there the same day as a Private in Company G, 8th Florida Infantry. He was probably 16, and was described as being 4 feet 9 inches high, with light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair, a laborer.

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was formally exchanged on 10 November 1862. He was admitted to a hospital in Richmond, VA on 14 November, sent to the CSA hospital in Danville, VA on 16 December with chronic diarrhea, and discharged there for disability on 18 February 1863. He was in Volusia County, FL at the end of the war.

By 1880 and to at least 1900 he was a farmer in Polk County, FL.

His gravesite is on Findagrave; his stone has his birth in 1834.

He married Nancy Jane Newton (1848-1930) in December 1866 and they had 2 children, born in 1877 and 1880.
