Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 20 year old student living with his parents, 3 younger siblings, and 19 slaves on their farm at Walnut Grove in the Spartanburg District, SC. He enlisted and mustered in Spartanburg on 21 November 1861 as a Private in Company A of the Holcombe Legion Infantry. He was promoted to 3rd Sergeant by December 1861 and was in a hospital in Richmond, VA, ill with dysentery, from 12 to 25 August 1862.
On the Campaign
He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.
The rest of the War
He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 22 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was in a Richmond, VA hospital by 8 October, furloughed for 30 days on 17 October, and formally exchanged on 10 November. He returned from furlough on 15 November 1862.
He was elected 2nd Lieutenant on 1 April 1863 and promoted to First Lieutenant on 27 October 1864 (to rank from 8 November 1863). He received pay on 18 February 1865, the latest record in his military file.
After the War
Going by Crawford, in 1870 he was farming with his parents and siblings at Glenn Springs in Spartanburg County, SC but by 1880 and to at least 1900 had his own farm in Fairforest Township, Spartanburg County.

He married Josephine Lipscomb (1845-1884) in December 1869 and they had 4 or 5 children. He married again,
Augusta O Harrison (1848-1892) in September 1884 and they had 4 more; the last named Holcomb (b. 1891). He married for the third time, Talitha Jane Williams (1843-1908).
His brothers Isaac Snoddy (1842-1920) and Edward Belton Miller (1844-1911), and uncle William Hamilton Miller were also in Company A. William was killed in Maryland.
