James Smith

In 1860 he was a 21 year old laborer living with father, tenant farmer Alfred, mother Nancy, and 6 siblings at Poolsville in the Spartanburg District, SC. He enlisted and mustered in Spartanburg on 21 November 1861 as a Private in Company A of the Holcombe Legion Infantry.

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange, arriving on 6 October. He was in a Richmond, VA hospital by 8 October, furloughed for 30 days on 6 November, and formally exchanged on 10 November 1862.

He was with his company to about February 1865, then sick in a hospital in Richmond, VA. He returned to duty and was captured in action at Five Forks VA on 1 April 1865. He was a prisoner at Point Lookout, MD and died there of acute diarrhea on 16 June 1865.
