Before Sharpsburg
From the Spartanburg District, he enlisted at Adams Run, SC on 16 March 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company E of the Holcombe Legion Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.
The rest of the War
He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to about 18 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was formally exchanged on 10 November 1862.
He was with his company until sent to the Jackson Hospital in Richmond, VA with pneumonia on 19 February 1865. He died there on 21 February.

His twin brother Elijah and younger brother John were also in Company E and neither survived the war: John died on 30 August or 1 September 1862, probably a casualty at 2nd Manassas; Elijah died at home of disease on 9 September 1863.
