Before Sharpsburg
Age 30, he enlisted and mustered in Montgomery, AL on 27 July 1861 as Private in the Jeff Davis Light Artillery.
On the Campaign
He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.
The rest of the War
He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was in a Richmond, VA hospital by 16 October, released from the hospital on 29 October, and formally exchanged on 10 November 1862.
He was listed as absent without leave at the end of February 1863, but was back with his company by May. He was convicted by a court martial on 9 April 1864, charges not found, and was serving a sentence in confinement from April to 1 December 1864. By March 1865 he was detached to serve with Lamkin's Battery (the Amherst-Nelson Virginia Artillery) with no later military record found.
