He enlisted as Private, (first) Company G, 3rd North Carolina Artillery (40th Regiment State Troops) in Edgecombe County on 1 March 1862.

On the Campaign

He was captured at Sharpsburg on 19 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was a prisoner at Fortress Monroe, VA to 10 November, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was transferred to Company D, 10th North Carolina State Troops (First Regiment Artillery) to date from 8 October 1862. He was captured at Amelia Court House, VA on 5 April 1865 and taken to Point Lookout, MD, where he died of chronic diarrhea on 4 July 1865.
