Before Sharpsburg

He enlisted in Richmond, VA on 1 March 1862 and mustered as a Private in Captain Pegram's Company, Virginia Light Artillery - the Purcell Artillery.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 19 September and afterward transferred for exchange. He was on detached service into February 1863, absent, sick in March and April, and was wounded in action at Gettysburg, PA on 3 July 1863. He was away from the battery on detached service with the CS Quartermaster's Department from August 1863 through most of 1864, and returned in November or December. He was captured at Petersburg, VA on 2 April 1865 and a prisoner at Fort Delaware until 20 June when he took an oath of allegiance to the United States and was released.

He was described as having a light complexion, light hair, and green eyes, being 6 feet and 1 inch tall.
