Darius Carter Sackett

Son of prosperous Canandaigua, NY farmer, local school commissioner, and state militia officer Augustine Sackett (1789-1883), in 1860 Darius was living with his parents and siblings and was a student at the Canandaigua Academy. He enrolled at Hamilton College in Clinton, NY in 1861, but left school to enlist in Canandaigua at age 22 on 11 August 1862. He mustered on 22 August as a Corporal in Company D, 126th New York Infantry, described as having blue eyes, brown hair, and light complexion, and stood 6 feet 5 inches tall.

He was wounded by a gunshot to his leg in action on Maryland Heights above Harpers Ferry on 13 September 1862.

He was treated at the post hospital in Harpers Ferry, then transported to the Naval School Hospital in Annapolis, MD where he was discharged for disability on 18 November 1862.

By 1865 he was again a student, giving his home address as his parent's place in Canandaigua, NY. He graduated from Hamilton College and was ordained a Presbyterian minister. In 1870 he was pastor of Rock Stream Presbyterian Church in Starkey, Yates County, NY, but he died early the next year, perhaps due to the effects of his war wound, just 31 years old.

He married Mittie Celestia Smith (1843-1903) in December 1866 and they had 2 sons: Frederick (1867-1869) and Albert (1869-1905).
