Henry Earnest Goodman

After medical school he specialized in ophthalmology and interned at Philadelphia Hospital and Wills Eye Hospital. Age 25, going by Earnest, he enrolled and mustered in Philadelphia, PA on 23 July 1861 as Surgeon of the 28th Pennsylvania Infantry.

He was with his regiment in Maryland and treated wounded soldiers in a field hospital on the Susan Hoffman Farm at Antietam on 17 September 1862 and afterward.

He was medical officer in charge of the Twelfth Army Corps field hospitals in Gettysburg, PA in July and August 1863. He was commissioned Assistant Surgeon, US Volunteers on 19 April 1864, was promoted to Surgeon, USV on 18 May 1864, and mustered out on 3 November 1865. He was honored by brevet to Lieutenant Colonel and Colonel of Volunteers on 13 March 1865 for his war service.

He was Port Physician at Philadelphia from 1866 to 1873 and also an Examining Surgeon for the US Pension Bureau. He taught surgery at the Medico-Chirurgical College of Philadelphia, founded two other Philadelphia hospitals, and was attending surgeon at Wills Eye Hospital. He died "while running for a train" in Philadelphia on 3 February 1896, age 59.

He married the twice-widowed Mary Church Henderson Geary (1828-1913) in April 1874.
