Jeremiah Griffith Stephens

In 1860 he was a 29-year old merchant in Albany, Dougherty County, GA. He enlisted there on 28 April 1861 and mustered as First Corporal of Company E of the 4th Georgia Infantry. By December he was 4th Sergeant. He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant on 6 May 1862 and promoted to First Lieutenant on 1 August.

He was one of the officers of the regiment recognized by Brigadier General Doles as having "commended themselves to my special notice by their gallant and meritorious conduct" in Maryland.

He was noted for "gallantry" while in charge of the sharpshooters of the regiment at Chancellorsville, VA on 2 and 3 May 1863 and again at Gettysburg, PA 1-4 July. He was wounded by a gunshot to his left thigh at Warrenton Springs, VA on 12 October and his leg was amputated. He was furloughed home from a hospital in Richmond, VA on 11 November 1863 for 60 days. He resigned his commission due to disability in April 1864.

By 1870 he was a dry goods merchant with a store in Albany, GA; his nephew Robert S Stephens (-1880) his clerk. In 1880 he operated a grist mill there and was still a working merchant in Albany in 1900. He lived in Albany to at least 1903.
