Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 23 year old bookkeeper living in Catherine Walters' hotel in Oglethorpe, Macon County, GA. He enlisted in Americus, GA on 27 April 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company K, 4th Georgia Infantry. He was elected brevet 2nd Lieutenant on 24 July 1862.
On the Campaign
He was one of the officers of the regiment recognized by Brigadier General Doles as having "commended themselves to my special notice by their gallant and meritorious conduct" in Maryland. He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 and "sent to rear."
The rest of the War
He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on 24 September and was in a Richmond, VA by 22 October, then furloughed home for 30 days. He was appointed First Lieutenant on 9 February 1863 and Captain on 3 May 1863 at Chancellorsville, VA. He was killed in action in the Wilderness, VA on 5 May 1864.
