Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a successful 29 year old physician in Americus, GA. He mustered as First Lieutenant of Company K, 4th Georgia Infantry on 27 April 1861 and was elected Captain at the Army reorganization on 27 April 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to Major in October 1862 and to Lieutenant Colonel on 1 November. He was killed in action at Gettysburg, PA on 1 July 1863 while in command of his Regiment.

His gravesite is on Findagrave; he was originally buried on the field at Gettysburg, probably at the Blocher Farm, and was re-interred in September 1871. His picture from a photograph in the collection of David W. Vaughan, and published to accompany his article Georgians in Gray Part II: A Photographic Look at the Empire State's Confederate Soldiers in The Georgia Historical Quarterly (Vol. 89, No. 2, Summer 2005).

He married Frances Mary Dean (1835-1874) in December 1854 and they had two sons.
