Before Antietam

A 23 year old medical student in Brookline, he enrolled as Captain, Company D, 20th Massachusetts Infantry on 20 July 1861. He was discharged to accept a commission as Captain of Company E, First Massachusetts Cavalry on 25 November.

On the Campaign

He was with his Company in Maryland.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to Major of the 2nd Massachusetts Cavalry on 31 January 1863. He was then Lt Colonel (March 1864), and finally Colonel and commander of the Regiment on 18 November 1864. He was honored by brevet to Brigadier General of Volunteers on 13 March 1865 and mustered out of the service in June 1865.
