Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 19 year old student living with his widowed mother in Athens, GA. He enlisted there on 25 May 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company K, 3rd Georgia Infantry on 30 June in Portsmouth, VA.

On the Campaign

He was wounded by a gunshot through his left hand, losing his middle finger, in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was on furlough from 14 October to 14 December 1862. He transferred to Company E, 15th Georgia Infantry on 6 August 1863 and was detailed to the Quartermaster's Department as QUartermaster Sergeant. He was captured on the march at Dandridge, TN on 22 (or 24) January 1864 and a prisoner at Rock Island, IL until released on 21 June 1865.

After the War

By 1870 and to at least 1900 he was a farmer at Sparta in Hancock County, GA. In 1910 he was listed as a moneylender there.

He married Martha Catherine "Kate" Rucker (1844-1882) in August 1865 and they had 7 children. He married again, the widow Leila Hurt Mabbett (1861-1933) in July 1897.
