Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 21 year old express messenger living with his parents in Athens, GA; his father William was Clerk of the Town Council. He enlisted in Athens on 10 June 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company K, 3rd Georgia Infantry on 30 June in Portsmouth, VA.
On the Campaign
He was wounded by a gunshot through his leg in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was on furlough home from 13 November to 17 March 1863. He was wounded again, at the Crater near Petersburg, VA on 30 July 1864. He was on light duty in Athens by February 1865 and was captured and paroled there on 8 May 1865.
After the War
In 1870 he was a retail grocer in Athens, living with his brother Albert, a dry goods merchant, and other siblings.
