Before Antietam

Before the war he was a newspaper editor at the Upland Union (Delaware County), and the Norristown National Democrat. He was mustered into service as Captain, Company F, 1st Pennsylvania Reserves on 30 May 1861.

On the Campaign

He was in command of the Regiment on the 17th after Colonel Roberts took over command of the Brigade.

The rest of the War

Promoted to Colonel and commander of the 1st Reserves 1 March 1863 after resignation of Colonel Roberts. He was in command and wounded in action at Fredericksburg and Gettysburg. He was captured at Spottsylvania Court House 8 May 1864 , but rescued from Richmond by Sheridan's cavalry raid of 8-11 May 1864. He mustered out with the Regiment 13 June 1864.

After the War

He was cited by brevet to Brigadier General, US Volunteers, 13 March 1865 for "gallant conduct at the battle of the Wilderness". After the war he was appointed Collector of Internal Revenue for the Seventh Pennsylvania District, and was member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives 1874-1875; a Democrat from Delaware County.1
