Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 22 year old timber cutter living with farmer James M Patterson and family at Owens Ferry in Camden County, GA. He enlisted on 4 March 1862 in Waresboro, GA and mustered as 2nd Sergeant of Company B of the 50th Georgia Infantry. He was appointed First Sergeant on 22 March.
On the Campaign
He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.
The rest of the War
He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 18 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was admitted to a Richmond, VA hospital on 6 October, sent to the parole camp, and formally exchanged on 10 November 1862.
He was appointed Sergeant Major, date not found. He was wounded by a gunshot to his left shoulder at Funkstown, MD on 10 July 1863, was in a Richmond, VA hospital by 23 July, and was furloughed for 35 days on 1 August. He was captured, place not given, on 29 November and a prisoner in Knoxville, TN to 13 December, then sent to Camp Chase, OH - date of return to duty not found.
He was appointed Ensign on 22 June (to date from 14 June) 1864 and was wounded again, at Cedar Creek, VA on 19 October 1864 and sent home on furlough. An inspection report of 28 February 1865, the last in his military file, shows him absent without leave since 1 January.
After the War
By 1870 he was the saw miller at Satilla Mills in Camden County, GA and in 1880 he was a dry goods merchant there. He was wealthy and a "prominent lumberman" by 1890, when he was shot and killed in his home by an employee with whom he'd been arguing.
