Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 14 year old living with his parents and 3 siblings on their farm at Waresboro in Ware County, GA. He enlisted on 6 June 1862 at Battery Walker near Waresboro, GA and mustered as a Private in Company B of the 50th Georgia Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.
The rest of the War
He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 18 September and afterward sent south for exchange.
He transferred to Company E of the 26th Georgia Infantry on 20 March 1863. He was wounded by a gunshot to his left leg which fractured his tibia (lower leg bone) in action at Gettysburg, Pa on 1 July and was captured on the retreat on South Mountain, MD on 4 July. He was admitted to a US Army hospital in Frederick, MD on 7 July and transferred to the West's Buildings Hospital in Baltimore on 23 September. He was paroled for exchange on 12 November, admitted to a hospital in Richmond, VA on 18 November, and furloughed for 60 days on 28 November 1863. He was back in a hospital due to his Gettysburg wound in March 1864 and furloughed for 30 days on 26 March.
He was captured again, date and place not found, and was in the Old Capitol Prison hospital with gunshots to the leg (old wound?) and hand in Washington, DC in November and December 1864. He was captured for the final time in action near Petersburg, VA on 25 March 1865 and was a prisoner at Point Lookout, MD until 24 June, when he took an oath of allegiance to the United States and was released.
After the War
He died young, possibly due to ill health from his difficult war service, at age 23 in 1869.

(Lillia Brewton) Ward of Blackshear in Pierce County, GA ordered a government headstone for him in February 1931; that application is the source of his middle name.
He married Lucinda E "Lula" Pittman (1853-) in May 1867 and they had a daughter Lillia Brewton (later Ward, 1868-1945).
