Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 23 year old merchant at Valdosta in Lowndes County, GA. He enlisted there on 4 March 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company D of the 50th Georgia Infantry. He was captured, place not given, on parole in June, and absent, sick, into August 1862.

On the Campaign

He was sent to a hospital in Frederick, MD by 12 September, left behind, and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD to 18 September and afterward was a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 2 October, then sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange. He was formally exchanged on 10 November and returned to duty in about February 1863.

He was elected Junior 2nd Lieutenant on 24 March (to date from 4 January) 1864. He was with his company to about February 1865, then "in arrest," charges not found. He was captured and paroled at Libby Prison in Richmond, VA in April 1865.

After the War

He operated a barroom on North Ashley Street in Valdosta, GA to at least 1870, but by 1880 was a horse dealer there, and lived with his sister Sarah (c. 1840-).
