Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 25 year old farmer at Bainbridge in Decatur County, GA. He enlisted as a Private in Company K, 1st Regiment, 1st Brigade, Georgia State Troops on 8 October 1861 and mustered out on 8 April 1862. He enlisted again, as a Private in Company F, 50th Georgia Infantry on 5 May.
On the Campaign
He was mortally wounded by a gunshot to his left shoulder in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862 which fractured his humerus (upper arm) and scapula (shoulder blade).
The rest of the War
He was admitted to US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick, MD about 25 September 1862 and a surgeon excised (removed) the broken head of his humerus on 26 September. He died from bleeding on 14 (or 4 or 6) October 1862.
