Before Sharpsburg
Pre-War Profession: Businessman Captain of the Baldwin Blues militia company. In 1861 he was Captain in the 4th GA Regiment. In May 1861 he was appointed Colonel and led the Regiment at Malvern Hill (wounded) and South Mountain.
On the Campaign
He led his Regiment as part of Ripley's Brigade in D.H. Hill's Division and took command of the Brigade when Brigadier General Ripley was wounded in the ferocious combat in the Sunken Lane on the 17th.
The rest of the War
He commanded Doles' Brigade in D. H. Hill's Division at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville and in Rodes' Division at Gettysburg the Wilderness Spotsylvania and Cold Harbor where he was killed.
