From Dover, he was appointed Captain, Company A of the 2nd Delaware Infantry at its formation in 1861.
On the Campaign
He was in command of the Regiment as senior officer present at Antietam.
The rest of the War
Sometime after Antietam he was promoted Major, and by Chancellorsville (May 1863) he was a Lieutenant Colonel and in command of the 2nd Delaware. He was wounded in action at Gettysburg on 2 July 1863. He returned to service, but was killed in action at Spottsylvania Courthouse, Virginia, on 12 May 1864.
