Before Antietam

He had pre-War service in the NJ Militia. He was appointed Major, 2nd New Jersey Infantry on 22 May 1861, was promoted Lieutenant Colonel on 20 January, 1862; and Colonel when Colonel Isaac Tucker was killed, on 1 July 62.

The rest of the War

He mustered out of the Regiment 21 July 1864.
