Age 22, he enlisted as a Private in Company C, 19th Indiana Infantry on 28 December 1861 in Indianapolis. He was detailed to Battery B, 4th United States Artillery in May 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action while serving with Battery B at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was reinterred from his original burial on the Antietam battlefield to the National Cemetery, grave #3447, about 1867.
