Age 19, he enlisted in Rochester on 7 October 1861 and mustered as Private, Company (Battery) L, First New York Light Artillery on 25 October.

He was mortally wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

He died of wounds on 24 September 1862.
After the War
He was reinterred from his original burial on the Antietam battlefield to the National Cemetery during or before 1867.
